How to Upload and Manage Server Files via SFTP

While the Pterodactyl panel’s built-in File Manager is great for quick edits and small uploads, SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) is the recommended method for transferring large files or managing files in bulk. SFTP provides a secure, encrypted connection to your server’s file system.

Finding Your SFTP Credentials

Your SFTP connection details are available in the Pterodactyl panel. Navigate to your server and look for the Settings tab. You will find your SFTP host address, port, and username. Your SFTP password is the same as your Pterodactyl panel password.

Connecting with an SFTP Client

Step 1: Download an SFTP Client

We recommend FileZilla or WinSCP, both of which are free. Download and install the client of your choice.

Step 2: Enter Your Connection Details

Open your SFTP client and enter the host, port, username, and password from the Pterodactyl panel.

Step 3: Connect

Click Connect or Quick Connect. You will be presented with your server’s file directory on one side and your local files on the other.

Step 4: Transfer Files

Drag and drop files between your local machine and the server. You can upload, download, rename, and delete files just as you would on your own computer.

Tip: SFTP is significantly faster than the browser-based uploader for large files such as world saves, resource packs, or bulk mod installations. Always use SFTP for transfers over 100MB.
